Emotions and Business

Not that emotions are always negative. An emotion is a feeling that makes circumstances favorable or unfavorable to you.

History has it that great men have brought about revolutions and won wars and battles by their sheer emotional strength. Had it not been for this attribute in them, we wouldn’t have remembered them with so much of reverence and admiration.

Emotionally you could be broadly classified into two types:positive entrepreneurs and negative entrepreneurs. The ones who are positive are determined, happy, patient, persevering and committed to their cause.

The negative ones are skeptical, unfocused, insecure and fearful about their future. There are any number of home business entrepreneurs who fall in the second category, while it requires a high emotional quotient to be in the first one.

Your emotions are your responses to events in your immediate environment. Interestingly, all of us react the same way to success or a seemingly good opportunity – that is by accepting it the way it comes. We only differ in our responses towards things or events that are either new to us or seem unfavorable or unpleasant.

Failure is an apt example in point. Some may take it as a dead-end to their efforts and would only react by calling it quits, while others may boldly face it and sit back and analyze where they went wrong and would start improving upon their weaknesses.
In other words, there is nothing wrong in failing. It’s so normal. What is of utmost importance is not failing to improve every time we fail.

There could be a background to such responses though. Invariably, our responses to different situations are a function of our own preconceived notions that develop within us by seeing or experiencing life over the years. As a result, our mind becomes programmed to react only two ways – either by flying away from the situation or by fighting it out. That is what we call a “flight or fight” reaction.

For instance, you are all set to start your home business. With adrenaline running high, you get on to learning the fundamentals of the business until you realize you will have to develop good presentation skills as a prerequisite to success.
You show a completely opposite emotion! You fear you wouldn’t be able to speak in front of your prospects because you have always been a lousy speaker.

Without even trying to understand what it takes to be a good presenter, you develop second thoughts and see your ambitions hurtling down like an avalanche from a mountain slope! Henry Ford has said, ‘Whether you think you can or you think you can't, either way, you are right!’ When he said this, he only meant, it’s up to us how we react to difficult and adverse situations.
Most of our negative emotions emanate from the fear of future which is the most uncertain aspect about our lives. Future has intrigued civilizations and generations, and would continue to do so.

Unfortunately, nobody can predict the events that are going to take place tomorrow. But they depend so much on our present day actions.
A simple business opportunity, for example, could be converted into a financially secure future. On the contrary, not recognizing such opportunities positively and being doubtful about them would anyway guarantee a gloomy tomorrow.

Nobody has ever benefited from negative emotions. Still we all fall prey to them. We attach so much of importance to these evils inside us that we lose the ability to tell good from bad. But there surely is a way to combat these evils.Contemplate before reacting to situations.

Ask yourself a few basic questions – Am I reacting the right way? Is this the way a great entrepreneur should react? How is this emotion going to help me? Is there even one benefit of this emotion?

Your own honest answers to these crude questions would take you to the right track. Believe it or not, most of the times, we do not give ourselves enough time to analyze situations. We just jump to conclusions and eventually go wrong. Greek philosopher once said, ‘To find yourself, think for yourself.’
A good self probe can bring a lot of difference in your emotional quotient. You may come out with wonderful positive emotions that would be nothing but solutions to your problems!
