Family, Friends and Your Home Business

You can ask the whole world to take a walk if people discourage you or disagree with what you do. The problem starts when you have to bear the taunts from your own family or friends.

Maintaining patience is not easy under such circumstances. The effect is a rage that engulfs your mind and makes you wrangle with everybody who tries to oppose you.

How do you react when your own close ones make nasty statements like – ‘You will not make much out of it’ or ‘That’s not what you should be doing’! It’s not easy to stay composed when such disappointing words are hurled at you while you are running around only to make things work.

I feel, that happens for various reasons. Your family members, especially your folks or spouse would be expecting you to do something that in their opinion is more secure. They might have a completely different viewpoint about career goals and would want you to establish the same! They try to impose themselves upon you and that’s where the problem starts!

And it’s not only home business that a family is against.Family members oppose not because any business is good or bad, they do so because of their strong prejudices.

Let us try to understand a basic problem here. It’s very difficult to suddenly position yourself in a new way, whether it is your office or your neighborhood or your own home. So if you go and tell your folks you are going to start a business (it hardly matters which one), they may dismiss your entire plan in jest.

They have always dreamt of you doing a job all of your life. In their opinion, only a job can provide security, no matter how much it sucks. The concept of business, unfortunately, is not so well accepted by most families. They feel, one who starts a business either couldn’t find a good job or failed to save one. They somehow don’t understand concepts like entrepreneurship, perseverance and commitment. On the contrary, they get worried about what you are going to do and oppose every initiative taken by you.

As far as discouragement from your friends is concerned, you shouldn’t care much. Most friends would pull you down every time you meet them by saying things that would only hit your subconscious mind. They might even give you weird ideas to distract you from your focus. And once that happens – your thinking system gradually starts believing them and destroys the faith that was developed by you.

But why do friends do that to you at all? Well, to say they are all jealous of you would be wrong here. You haven’t yet started raking in……! Maybe some already are, but most of them behave with you in that funny manner because they feel you are no more the same person you used to be. They try to bring you back in the same garb, so that they can relate to you. And in that case, you shouldn’t take their remarks so seriously and only wait for them to accept your new avatar.

You should also give them time to accept your new form and if they are true friends, they will not only accept that, they would also start encouraging you in your business.

Still there are some who would never stop saying derogatory things. You can safely drift away from such ‘friends’ as they would keep pestering you until you start believing their poisonous words.

The only difference between the discouragement from your family and that from your friends is about the intentions. I might sound clichéd saying that your family cares for you and your future. All the discouragement is probably because of the doubts they might have about your capabilities, though their intentions are never to dampen your spirits. Unfortunately, they have never imagined you doing anything other than a drab job that gives you enough money to pay your bills and save you some for the future.

Sit with them, discuss your dreams and aspirations and make them understand why you want to start a home based business after all. Tell them the difference it would bring in your life. Tell them how dissatisfying it is to work under someone. And then explain to them the merits of home business and how people have made fortunes for themselves.

Always remember, your family needs to be only convinced about your goals. Once that happens, you would be amazed at the wonderful support they would become.
