Your Philosophy in Business
Your success in home business depends so much on the tenets you follow. How you want to do business is what you call as your business philosophy. It’s your philosophy that determines how far you want to go in your business. History has it that this very aspect has changed the lives of many a man. Businesses have either grown into giants or shut down because of right or wrong philosophies. We would refrain from being more abstract in my viewpoints here.
To understand it better, I would quickly take you through an interesting case about two friends who started their businesses at the same time after passing out from college – Ken opened a restaurant while Phil started his travel agency. While Ken believed in following short-cuts to success, Phil always believed that the only way one can achieve success is by commitment and perseverance.
Both had completely opposite perspectives and philosophies. Phil had to face several teething troubles in setting up his business while Ken started making money pretty fast and without any hassles. Well, not that he was working hard, it was because he would use low quality material and edibles and dupe his customers with high rates on the menu.
However, word spread around about the pathetic quality and high rates and just in a couple of month’s time Ken’s once always-packed-restaurant turned into an almost deserted place with only a few customers who wouldn’t know about the reality. Phil on the other hand, was happy that his hard work and efforts were yielding results. But he continued to maintain his discipline and perseverance, as he knew he would have to wait a little more before he could achieve time and financial freedom.
It’s all about how as an entrepreneur you think towards your goals. If you feel you need to change your thought process for the benefit of your home business, do so now! It’s better to take corrective measures right in the initial stages. Almost 97% of the people in home businesses fail, and in a good number of such cases it’s because of their wrong philosophies.
Ensuring a sound business philosophy
You should be clear about the kind of company that you want to join. No company is good or bad unless there is something basically wrong with its vision and practices. Still, your choice should depend upon your philosophy or the kind of environment you would be comfortable working in.
You should know about things that you have to do and things you have to avoid. For example, as a home business entrepreneur, you must know who would be your best prospects and who you should not focus on.
A good business philosophy would be to correctly disclose facts and details about your company to the prospects. If you beat about the bush and play with words, they would only either misunderstand or suspect your otherwise good motives.
Change your old philosophy if you feel it’s not in harmony with your business concept or model. At times your own personality reflects in your philosophy. But that may or may not blend so well with the business you are in.
For example, a person who has just quit his job to move full time into the home business industry, may find it a little uncomfortable to settle down in his new environment. He might still maintain his old philosophy to work a fixed number of hours and expect returns the first month onwards! That would be unusual in any business for that matter, since it easily takes months before one starts making a reasonable amount of money.
Often enthusiastic entrepreneurs get misled by some seemingly successful people who would do anything to achieve success. Needless to say that such entrepreneurs only forget that the path is more important than the destination.
